What is it?

A hands-on, seminar style history course presented by the Museum Volunteers of the Philippines covering major historical events in the Philippines. Topics will cover key episodes from the pre-colonial period up to the modern day.

The course is divided into the following broad sections:

  • Early History

  • Spanish Era

  • American-Japanese Era

  • Independence Era

  • Contemporary Times

Each section is covered in a variety of ways:

Carefully chosen guest speakers give expert insight into the topics covered.

Students are provided with opportunities for interactive learning such as participating in discussions and/or volunteering to make presentations on topics they are interested in.

Field trips, relevant to the topic being studied, are also organised for each section. Previous year’s trips have included guided visits to Intramuros, Corregidor Island, American Cemetery, Manila Hotel, and more. But with the current pandemic, all plans for field trips are put on hold.

Who is it for?

The course is ideal for anyone who wishes to learn more about the Philippines. It allows for a deeper understanding of the country through participant presentations, field trips, guest speakers and special events. All that you need is an enthusiasm for learning and the ability to read and write English.

All presentations are in English and help is given to those for whom English is not their first language. Extra support is also provided for those who would like help with their presentation skills.

When is it?

The course is held every Wednesday from late October until March, from 10:30am to 12:00nn.  Breaks occur at Christmas/New Year.  For now, all classes are conducted online using Zoom.  Should the situation permit, the course finishes with a Graduation Lunch in March at which successful students are awarded a certificate.

Classes are not held when the Wednesday session coincides with a regular or special non-working Philippine holiday.

How much does it cost?

The online course fee is set at PhP4,500 for all the sessions. Membership in the Museum Volunteers of the Philippines (MVP) is required for everyone in the course. The annual membership fee of PhP1,500 is included in the History Course Registration fee.

We regret that refunds cannot be given should anyone have to withdraw from the course. Registration is transferable to someone else for the same year.

Additional costs apply to optional field trips and the Graduation Lunch, CoVid-19 situation permitting.
